Session Description:

With the increasing number of Office for Civil Rights (OCR) investigations and settlements as well as the continued targeting of healthcare providers by third party actors breaching their networks, there is no better time to make sure your community and staff are familiar with the HIPAA Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules.  This session will cover a variety of topics related to HIPAA and data privacy compliance – a refresher on the HIPAA basics; Office for Civil Rights (OCR) enforcement and settlements; business associates; personal representatives, guardians, and healthcare durable powers of attorney; social media and online comments; subpoenas; and ransomware.   Brooke will help attendees unjumble the mishmash of HIPAA compliance and enforcement for implementation in their communities. 

Objectives:

• Become familiar with the basic requirements of the HIPAA Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules
• Identify potential HIPAA risk compliance areas
• Understand the role of personal representatives as defined under HIPAA and how they relate to legal guardians or healthcare durable powers of attorney
• Learn tips for managing social media and online comments, business associates, and responding to subpoenas
