Both patients and staff of healthcare facilities have certain gun-related rights under applicable Kansas and federal law, including rights under Kansas’s conceal-care law (the Kansas Personal and Family Protection Act), and facilities often must strike a careful balance between protecting those rights and managing risks at their facilities. Furthermore, active-shooter situations are a significant issue of concern for all facilities, and active-shooter preparation has become an important part of emergency preparedness. This session will cover a variety of topics pertaining to gun-related compliance, risk-management, and planning both for governmental and private facilities, including compliance with the Kansas Personal and Family Protection Act, compliance with federal requirements related to gun safety and active-shooter situations, and best practice concerning staff and patient possession and storage of guns.
