As you will see, this year we’ve scheduled the 2011 Fall Regulatory and Policy Conference and the 2011 Nursing and Aging Service Conference together. We hope that by doing so, you can take advantage of the convenience of a one day conference that is still chock full of education and networking opportunities or take advantage of both days at a special rate, and have a great experience at both conferences. We’ve designed some sessions to be of value to both audiences, check out the agendas for both days…Fall Conference attendees, note that the nurse conference has sessions that may be of interest, and Nurse Conference attendees, note that you may have interested in attending sessions at the Fall Conference. In this way, we hope to give you as many options as possible for education, networking and experience.

C) One Year In: Update on Kansas Health Profession Opportunity Project
Come to this session to learn about the Kansas Health Profession Opportunity Project, a grant awarded to Kansas in September of 2010 to provide healthcare education, training and employment for TANF recipients and other low income individuals. You’ll learn the expectations going into the first year of the grant and challenges and identified opportunities that have resulted from the grant. You’ll also discover how lives have been changed for KHPOP participants and the benefits enjoyed by employers that hire KHPOP participants.

What You Need To Know About the Kansas Health Information Network
Come to this session to hear Dr. McCrary provide an overview of the Kansas Health Information Network (KHIN) and discuss how health information exchange is being implemented in Kansas and surrounding states. Dr. McCrary will discuss the importance of long term care and assisted living facilities participation in the exchange and share ideas about possible use cases for the exchange of data with hospitals. A presentation of the technology functionality will be provided and the session will conclude with a question and answer session regarding the steps necessary for participation.

Role of Nursing in Culture Change – How Far Have We Come?
Join Marilyn in this interactive session to come to a better understanding of where we’ve been and where we are now in the journey to culture change. You’ll review a variety of social models, including a brief overview of the household model at Permham Memorial Home. Compare nursing practices with culture change principles to find common ground, discover benefits and challenges for nurses, discuss quality outcomes of changing culture from Perham Memorial Home and other organizations. You’ll also hear success stories from your peers, as well as identifying roadblocks, all from the nurses’ perspective.
Presenter: Marilyn Oelfke, Senior Director of LTC Services
Marilyn Oelfke is a registered nurse with a bachelor’s degree in Health Facilities Administration. She completed the Patient Care Administration program through the University of Minnesota. She has worked in healthcare for more than 40 years in a variety of settings. For the past 21 years, she has served as Director of Nursing and more recently Director of LTC Services at Perham Memorial Home. Marilyn’s passion to transform the long-term care facility into a home for the residents has lead her and the staff through an incredible an rewarding journey into culture change.

Pneumonia and Heart Failure: Potentially Deadly Duo Diseases in Older Adults
National Health Care Reform includes penalties for hospital readmission rates that exceed a threshold for certain conditions; those conditions include pneumonia and heart failure. This program will focus on the pathophysiology and general management of older adults with pneumonia and heart failure. Differences between Community Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) and Health Care-associated pneumonia will be presented. Discussion regarding the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion for sepsis will be included. The program will also note differences between systolic and diastolic heart failure. Emphasis will be placed on accurate assessment skills and recognition of the unique challenges inherent in the care of older adults.
Presenter: Sharee A. Wiggins, NP, Post-MS(N), ARNP, BC-GNP, BCANP
Mrs. Wiggins has over 30 years of professional experience and is a practicing NP and faculty at KU School of Medicine in the Division of Geriatric Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine. She provides medical care for older adults 3-4 halfdays per week in area CCRCs. She also serves as Associate Director for Clinical Excellence at the KU Geriatric Education Center. She has developed numerous academic web modules, and has both professional and lay publications. Prior to joining the Center on Aging and the School of Medicine, Mrs. Wiggins served as a full-time faculty member at the University of Kansas School of Nursing for 15 years in undergraduate and graduate programs, and was a recipient of undergraduate and graduate excellence in teaching awards and nominations. Prior to obtaining advanced degrees, she worked for many years in critical care, IV Therapy, and other arenas. |

A) Medication Reduction
In this session, you’ll review how polypharmacy can affect the elderly population. Discuss factors that contribute to adverse drug reactions in the elderly, and the benefits of a liberalized medication pass system. You’ll also learn the impact of permanent assignments on a liberalized medication administration system.

B) Person-Centered Care for Those With Dementia
In this session you will learn effective communication techniques to minimize misunderstandings with persons with dementia. Explore environmental modifications that can improve the quality of life for these residents, and discuss how to manage negative behaviors without the use of medications. Non-pharmacological ways to help minimize distress will also be discussed.

C) Person Directed Care Planning
Come to this session to learn how to make your care planning process better for your residents by returning the care plan to its “rightful owner”. Learn how the care plan can be a useful professional tool that staff actively reference and examine strategies to reduce time spent on unnecessary paperwork.

Session Two: Role of Nursing in Culture Change: The Leadership Skills Required To Get Us There
Come to this session to understand why our changing culture requires the need for a different style of leader. Learn the difference between management and leadership, and come to understand "shared leadership." You’ll review Nurse Competencies for Nursing Home Culture Change, review roadblocks from session one, and working in small groups, share ideas for addressing them.
